Hudy
2005
35" wide, 25" high and 17" deep
Glass, copper foil and solder
This wall-mounted sculpture is created using a series of grinders (from standard to extremely fine). Each of the thousands of pieces of glass was individually contoured on its surface to create impressions of flowing hair, shiny nose and even tarter stained teeth. Foil backing each piece allows the light to bounceback at the viewer, giving the effect of sunlight dancing off the dog's silky hair.
Half a century ago, a dog sailing through the air to grab a Frisbee was unheard of. And perhaps such sights will fade into history in the not too distant future. "Hudy" captures this common sight of late 20th century Americana and locks it in the permanent brilliance of glass (until some fool drops it).
This sculpture honors the memory of Tim "Hudy" Meyer, his youthful spirit and the zest for life he shared with all who knew him.
